We started a potting shed garden to get a head start on the growing season. The weather is still a bit unpredictable -- 80 degrees on Saturday... a snow storm on Sunday. So, we pulled out the Pocket Garden Seed Collection I found during a business trip to Tucson, AZ. My son and I carefully prepared the soil and then planted the seeds in terracotta pots. In the Denver area, we'll wait until after Mother's Day to transplant our seedlings to a plot in our backyard ranch. I found this adorable tin of seeds at the Bon boutique. The gourmet salad garden has seeds for spicy greens, gourmet lettuce, deep purple bunching onions, pencil carrots and bite-sized tomatoes. All the elements for a delectable gourmet salad that my five-year-old is excited to eat!

As part of the home farming movement, we started our backyard ranch in the Spring of 2011 with a small clutch of chicks from our local ranchers supply store Murdoch's. We live in a large urban community with over 95,000 homes so for most people, the concept was a little foreign. Raise chickens in your backyard? What were we going to do with them? Are they boys or girls? Where are you going to keep them? These were just some of the more common questions and/or concerns. Well, it seems rather practical to me. I decided to raise chickens to teach my five-year-old son some basic ranching and of course for the fresh eggs!
